Malu Malu Minar: Art of the Torres Strait celebrates the work of Torres Strait artists. Presented at the Cairns Art Gallery and the Tjibaou Cultural Centre in New Caledonia the exhibition expresses the strong links between the peoples of the Torres Strait and New Caledonia.
There are many synergies between the arts of the Torres Strait and those of neighbouring nations. The long history of transience between islands, the coming of missionaries and the industries of sugarcane and pearling, have all resulted in an overlay of cultural practice and artistic representation. Today, young Torres Strait artists are telling their traditional stories and generating great interest in the ways that they are choosing to represent them. This artistic momentum is also being seen in other pacific nations such as New Caledonia and New Zealand, where young and emerging artists are choosing to engage with their indigenous histories and in consequence are producing works using contemporary techniques and materials that are both relevant to today’s audiences and reverent to the past.
