Growing up in the suburban rim of the tropical rainforests of Far North Queensland, Wallwork has always been inspired by his local landscape, and its unique flora and fauna, particularly the regions colourful birdlife.
Featherweight is an exploration of the form and colour of feathers, and the weight of meaning that they can invoke or carry, no matter how small, light, fragile and often overlooked the feather itself is.
The feather is an evocative form, embraced, honoured and utilised by cultures all over the world. Feared by some, worshipped by others, from practicality to fashion, culture and religion, the feather holds more importance in our daily lives than we realise, they are all around us.
The works also pay homage to the over 430 different species of bird-life found throughout Far North Queensland Area. With particular reference to the awe and beauty of the black cockatoo feather.
Using industrial mediums such as; urethane foam, fiberglass and 2 pack paint, Wallwork utilises his skills as an automotive spray painter and industrial artist, to playfully juxtapose nature verses industry to capture the essence of these beautiful forms via a series of lush sculptural works. The result has been a collection of slick, high gloss, hard-edged, yet organic, soft feeling forms.
Featherweight is an exhibition of new sculptural works by Cairns-based artist Daniel Wallwork.
