Peter Thompson was born in 1945 and grew up in Sydney before mocing to far north Queensland in 1976.

In 1995 he studied at Nanjing University where he had access to some of the finest forms of high fired porcelain that was invented more than three thousand years ago This experience informed his passion for exploring abstracted form and line with themes based on both Occidental and Oriental histories and references.

Peter creates functional ware, sculptural vessels and figurative sculptures, using waste oil, wood and gas to create ceramic works that rely on his mastery of high temperature firing.

Peter has undertaken many artist-in-residency programs both in Australia and overseas and these experiences have shaped the ideas and philosophies that inform his abstracted ceramic works. 

Peter has participated in numerous exhibitions, including a solo exhibition at the Cairns Art Gallery in 2021. In 2022 he was represented in the Cairns Art Gallery’s group exhibition, ARTNOW FNQ and a series of commissioned works are held in the Gallery’s Permanent Collection.
